Dr. Hal Mathews joined Medtronic as Vice Precedent of Medical Affairs in January of 2007. Prior of entering the medical device business, Dr. Mathews was an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia.
He is a board certified Orthopaedic surgeon last practicing at MidAtlantic Spine Specialists in Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia.
Dr. Matthews holds hospital affiliations at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals as well as HealthSouth Medical Center, Henrico Doctors Hospital and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Dr. Mathews specialized in spine and trauma surgery early in his career, he has developed many minimally invasive spine techniques that have had a tremendous impact on today’s surgical procedures.
Dr. Mathews earned his Medical Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia and did his surgical internship at the University Hospitals. Following his general surgery internship, Dr. Matthews completed an Orthopeadic residency program with emphasis in spine.
He is a society fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society (NASS). Dr. Mathews was an active member holding several leadership positions in these societies, serving on the NASS Board of Directors and Executive Committee for 6 years prior to his retirement from medical practice. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Spine Arthroplasty Society and was President of The International Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery when he joined Medtronic in January 2007.
