Dr. Hallett Mathews is a VP and the Chief Medical Officer for the Spinal and Biologics Division of Medtronic, based in Memphis Tennessee. Prior to joining Medtronic, he was President of MidAtlantic Spine Specialists in Richmond and Williamsburg, VA., where he owned and practiced in a private multidisciplinary spine surgery practice. Dr. Mathews is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery maintaining certification through 2018.
Dr. Mathews earned his medical degree at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia. Following his surgical internship at MCV, he completed his residency program with emphasis in spine. In the late 1980’s, Dr. Mathews became very active in the spine field as he shifted his focus from orthopedics to specialized spine surgery. In the early-nineties, he co-chaired the Spine Institute with Dr. Harold Young at MCV where he directed a fellowship program for the training of orthopedic and neurosurgical residents. With his emphasis in spine he specialized in trauma, reconstructive surgery and research with new technology. He is recognized by his peers, nationally and internationally, as a pioneer of minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr Mathews completed his MBA training at the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville, TN.
Dr. Mathews is a society fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery; member and past Board of Directors of the North American Spine Society, where he served as Education Council Director and Secretary; member and a past board member for the Board of Directors for the Spinal Arthroplasty Society; member and past President and past American Secretary for the International Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery {ISMISS}.He has served on the Editorial Board of Spine, The Spine Journal and Spine Universe. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for In-Motion-Musculoskeletal Institute.
Dr. Mathews continues to gives presentations and lectures at scientific meetings and universities worldwide. He led 6 FDA/IDE studies as Principle Investigator and has presented to the FDA as a panel member for INFUSE, the Bryan cervical disc and most recently for AMPLIFY. He represented the Orthopedic Spine Manufacturing Association, {OSMA} in development of study designs and methodology. He has developed and holds many patents; has published numerous journal articles and has contributed over 15 chapters to medical texts. His current roles as a Chief Medical Officer extend to serving as a liaison to clinical, medical affairs, legal, medical education and global evidence development with cross functional roles in business development and strategy. As the CMO, he leads Medtronic efforts in Physician Advisory Boards. He continues to focus on his passion for research and the development of new technology.
